ECO: Educating Children Outdoors

ECO in dandelions

Working together with public schools to build lasting relationships with our environment

ECO is a standards-based nature immersion program created by the North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier, Vermont.  We teach in collaboration with public school teachers and their students in the natural spaces near the school.  ECO’s goal is to help children and their school to develop a lasting relation with the natural world and foster a sense of place and stewardship in our local Vermont communities.  We work closely with the students' teachers to craft lessons that help meet Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards outdoors.

Twinfield kindergarteners and their teachers began going outside to learn alongside ECO staff in 2012, and the program has expanded each year.  For 2015-2016, we are thrilled to announce that pre-school through 6th graders are going outside regularly during the school day to explore the natural community right outside their classroom.
